It’s slang for “money.”
It’s also a term for handwriting, and it’s what happens when you apply pressure to the surface of something.
We’re the editors, Jane Friedman and Manjula Martin. We’ve both worked in digital and print media across industries—publishing, journalism, academia, and the arts. Everywhere we go, we see and hear from writers who are struggling with the economic realities of these industries. New platforms are opening up amazing possibilities, but they’re also bringing up questions that have been lurking beneath the surface for a long time: Is any of this financially sustainable? Should we expect it to be?
Scratch explores the relationship between money and art, literature and business, life and work—and advances the conversation in the process. We aren’t interested in bitterness or entitlement; we prefer pragmatism, curiosity, and empathy. It’s also helpful to have a sense of humor about this stuff.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for writing.
